Photo 101: Planning for Fall Family Photos, Part 1!

Hey, y’all!!  Today is our awesome monthly feature, Photo 101, which is all about photography!  It has been a big hit with you guys, and I am so happy to be answering your photo-related questions again and sharing a few tips along the way!!     Each month, we will talk about various topics.  So far, we’ve discussed:

taking great pictures with your iPhone

where to print you images

photo storage

being a mom with a camera

composing your images

editing workflow

photographing small children

Today, we are talking about dressing for Family photos!!  This is easily the number one question that I get from my clients!   I am so happy to be sharing my answers with y’all here today! I divided this topic into two categories….Today, I am just listing some guidelines…and tomorrow, I will show some actual items that I think would be great for Fall Family photos this season!   Here we go!   Part 1!

Dress with a Purpose

If your goal is to hang or frame your final images, then consider what look or color schemes you might like to have on your walls. 🙂 This might mean that you go more neutral to match your decor or add a certain pop of color to compliment your room based on your preferences. 🙂

Don’t be afraid of color, patterns, layers, and accessories

Gone are the days when you all have to dress in white tops and jeans! 😉 Adding interest in a portrait can mean adding in colors, accessories, a pattern or two, or simple layers! This can often make photos seem more dimensional and personal. 🙂

 Ladies First

Women’s and girls’ clothing is usually more complicated, so I always say that it’s best to work that out first! Ladies, feel free to start there, and match the men and boys once you have a good theme going. 🙂

Keep it Comfortable

Family portraits are all about capturing special memories, and these types of sessions just tend to go better when everyone is feeling comfortable!

It doesn’t have to be new

I follow this rule with my own family all the time. 🙂 If you have something that you love to wear/feel good in or love seeing your kids in, go ahead and use it for your family pictures. 🙂 This takes all of the guesswork out of whether everything will fit or be flattering! Once you do this one time, I promise you will never go back. 😉

Don’t be afraid to Dress according to your family’s personality

Most importantly, your outfits should reflect your family’s personality! Don’t be afraid to honor that! Whether your look is more classic or laid back, colorful or quirky…choose a wardrobe that shows that! You will love looking back on those memories so much!

That’s all for Part 1! Happy Wednesday, friends!! See you back here tomorrow for Part 2! XOXO Narci
