Choosing Outfits for Fall Family Pictures

Today, we are talking about dressing for Family photos. This is easily the number one question that I get from my clients, and I can definitely understand why! This can be a stressful situation making sure that everyone’s outfits coordinates, so I hope these tips help to relieve just a tiny bit of stress.

Our Fall Pictures from last year ๐Ÿ™‚

Tip 1: Identify your goal for the pictures

If your goal is to hang or frame your final images, then consider what look or color schemes you might like to have on your walls. ๐Ÿ™‚ This might mean that you go for a more neutral look to match your decor or add a certain pop of color to compliment your room and based on your preferences. :). Or maybe, you might like to be a touch more adventurous and go for a more themed look for something different and fun for Christmas cards. There is no wrong or right answer here! It always pays to really think about what you would like for your final product and what you will be using them for, so you aren’t disappointed later.

Tip 2: Don’t be afraid of color, patterns, layers, and accessories

Gone are the days when you all have to dress in white tops and jeans! Adding interest in a portrait can mean adding in colors, accessories, a pattern or two, or simple layers! This can often make photos seem more dimensional and personal.

ย Tip 3: Ladies First

Womens’ and girls’ clothing is usually more complicated, so I always say that it’s best to work that out first! Ladies, feel free to start there, and match the men and boys once you have a good theme going. ๐Ÿ™‚

Tip 4: Keep it Comfortable

Family portraits are all about capturing special memories, and these types of sessions just tend to go better when everyone is feeling comfortable!

Tip 5: It doesn’t have to be new

I follow this rule with my own family all the time. ๐Ÿ™‚ If you have something that you love to wear/feel good in or love seeing your kids in, go ahead and use it for your family pictures. ๐Ÿ™‚ This takes all of the guesswork out of whether everything will fit or be flattering! Once you do this one time, I promise you will never go back. ๐Ÿ™‚

Don’t be afraid to Dress according to your family’s personality

Most importantly, your outfits should reflect your family’s personality! Don’t be afraid to honor that! Whether your look is more classic or laid back, colorful or quirky…choose a wardrobe that shows that! You will love looking back on those memories so much!

Happy Wednesday, friends!! See you back here on Friday for more fun. XOXO Narci

  1. Perfect timing for this post! We have our family fall photos coming up soon! My photographer changes the venue every year so I also try to pick outfit colors that go with the location! I LOVED our photos last year with jeans and sweaters. Iโ€™m thinking of going bolder with patterns this year! Your family photo looks great from last fall!

  2. This is so helpful! I never thought about thinking through how the final product will look on the wall with the colors we chose! Thanks Narci!
